There are those of us who wish, or perhaps should have been born in a previous time . At least that has always been my feeling about the 1860's and the period of westward expansion that followed . I have read books about those times most of my life . I have been to Gettysburg, most of Virginia's hollowed battlefields numerous times, and many of the sacred sites throughout the South, that preserve the memory of the thousands who gave their lives to either save the Union, or in the noble cause of Southern independence . Many of those who survived the terrible years of that horrible conflict went on to settle and build the western United States . Sadly, the free and simple life of the Native American people was destroyed as a result , and just as the old South had lost it's fight for independence , so too the noble Indian fell victim to government rule ,and true freedom was lost forever . All my life I have been fascinated by those times , and especially the people that endured them . Honor , chivalry , gallantry, used to really mean something back then . Words hardly even mentioned in today's world . A world I seem to fit into less and less each day. It is my sincerest hope that my portraits ,and artwork do honor to those heroes , men and women alike . I love reading about them , and trying to touch their spirits in the old places where they were ; Tombstone , Deadwood , Shiloh , Spotsylvania Courthouse , and countless others. I wasn't there , I can't be there , but I do remember them , and wish it were possible to have been there , in a time now past .
